What strategies are utilized to control the mosquito population? Define sylvatic cycle and urban cycle. What are their consequences on the human population?

In what way do infected monkeys transmit the illness to humans?

 Malaria

How and where is malaria transmitted? Symptoms? Treatment? Curable? Contagious? Morbidity and mortality rates? Precautionary measures? Which rainforest creatures are also affected?

How is malaria spreading in the United States? Why have the incidences and severity sharply  increased worldwide? Define endemic. What is airport malaria?

What changes would you recommend to launch a more successful campaign against this illness?

 

2. Insect Repellent

Define insect repellent. When should it be used? Who should use it? Which ingredients in insect repellents give the most effective protection? Give brand names of those judged as most effective.

How much time before your trip should you see a health care professional for prescriptions, shots and information? What are the rules for using insect repellent most effectively? What should you do if you have an allergic reaction?

Which behaviors reduce dangers associated with mosquitoes of the rainforest?

 

3. General Mosquito Borne Illnesses

Name additional mosquito borne illnesses. How do mosquitoes transmit illnesses? What invention of the 1880s provided an immeasurable safety device against mosquitoes to people in their homes? What protective steps and behaviors have been proven effective in combating mosquitoes in the home environment?

Make a poster listing steps to take for reducing the mosquito infestation and unwanted exposure at home. Title: Protect Yourself!

 

4. Medicinal Plants of the Peruvian Rainforest

Dragon’s Blood or Sangre de Grado is a widely used medicinal plant of the Peruvian rainforest used in Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Mexico and the United States although it has not been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration.. How did it get its name? What are its medicinal and industrial uses?

What other medicinal treatments and cures come from the rainforest? Explain the importance of the rainforest in providing healing and restorative treatments in Western Medicine.

Shaman

Define shaman. Support the importance of the shaman to indigenous people? Explain the crucial roles shaman play in helping scientists discover the potential of plants. Where do shaman store their knowledge?

How have multinational practices threatened individual and cultural survival? What can we as individuals do to help preserve traditional knowledge, indigenous cultures and tropical ecosystems?

 

5. Become An Eco-Tourist

Get ready to become a world traveler! Plan a trip to the rainforest of Peru. Of course, you can pretend or you can actually go. It’s up to you!

* Locate Peru on a map. Bordering ocean and countries? Major sites and cities?
*Google Plan A Trip To the Peruvian Rainforest
 *Choose the length of your stay, which sites to visit
*Understand climate conditions
*Identify travel and sleeping accommodations-jungle lodges, backpacking tours, riverboat excursions, small hotels
*Determine amenities, if any
*Inquire about airline schedules, fares, luggage rules, ground transportation *Research tours, excursions, activities such as tree climbing and sport fishing *Decide on a budget and appropriate luggage such as different size suitcases, duffel bag, backpack, day trip bag
*Apply for a passport
*Check which health providers can provide malaria and yellow fever protection as well as altitude sickness aids if visiting higher elevations
*Purchase personal safety items such as flashlights; appropriate clothing for trekking such (boots, hiking shoes, sun hat,  sunglasses) ; personal protection (insect repellent, sunscreen); toiletries such as toilet paper and wipes, hand gel
*Understand payment options (cash, debit card, VISA, Master Card, NOT American Express
*Include Spanish Translation Dictionary
*Arrange for a cell phone service provider
*Obtain electrical adapters for charging electronic equipment
*Ascertain if your personal items are eco-friendly

 

State a rule for human survival in the rainforest of Peru.
