Want To Live Like A Miami Yuppie?

Welcome to my blog!

Welcome to my blog!

The May/June 2015 issue of Brickell Magazine (Miami) ran an interesting article “City Slickers” written by Rony Mo (pp.145-146). The newly presented image of the urban yuppie (young urban professional) replaces the dreaded stereotype of the past. You know the type: cutthroat, inflated ego, braggart, overworked, no life, identified only with the place of business shunning family and social obligations to dedicate themselves to the corporation which turned around and down-sized or reorganized them right out of their jobs and pension plans. That lifestyle choice is so passé. Good riddance.

Want to know how to do it the Miami way? Read on.

*Keep the work-life balance – No more workaholics. Ask your employers to show you the money and benefits and prove they won’t abuse your willingness to be a team player.

*Work To Live – Always have time to pursue your personal goals, volunteer and moonlight in that second glamorous career.

*Work, Then De-Stress – Work hard  and focused for 8-10 hours during your work day, but leave time to de-stress the rest of the time.

*Dress More Casually To Set You Apart– In fact, work spaces are becoming increasingly casual and collaborative because they’re more effective than the top-down approach of the well-dressed worker bees. Don’t fret your lack of designer clothes.

*Remain Courageous in Leaderless and Immobile Environments – The ability to motivate peers is just as important as being a self-starter, if not more so.

*Remain Certain Living Well Is the Best Revenge – Respect and conserve natural resources at the office as well as at home. Commend sustainable lifestyles and reduce carbon footprints for yourself and future generations.

* It’s Important To Be Social And Successful – Entertaining clients at a jazz club or an art gallery opening sets you apart from the usual dinner/drinks scene.

*Turn Your Back on Self-Inflated Egos and Corporate Bullies

*Give Back To The Community

*Have Positive Mentors And Shun Aggressive Tactics

Sounds like a positive, balanced approach, doesn’t it? This is how it works in Miami, but Miami is an evolved city. People always have time to eat healthful foods, play, relax and exercise while respecting nature and the environment. How prevalent is this behavior in the city in which you live? I’m not sure. Take a look around and let me know. I’d love to hear from you.

How often do “yuppies” tend to eat out or order takeout vs. eating in?

      Hi Gabriela,
Interesting question, but I don’t have any statistics to back up my answer. My daughter, who just moved from Miami, tells me yuppies are not so much into cooking. Many young people enjoy business lunches or dinners in restaurants at least a few times a week. In addition, they stop at Whole Foods to pick up a ready-made meal. They also tend to order basic meals from catering companies that deliver healthful foods to their homes. Regular take-out is also popular with a heavy concentration on healthful foods..
      I hope this helps.
      Regards,
      Elaine
